When The Body Struggles
Discomfort, pain, illness and disease ..our bodies face a lot of challenges. Anyone may have to go through times when the body struggles.
When that happens it is important to understand that body and mind are a whole. They cannot be separated. After all the mind arises out of the activity of the brain and the brain is the seat of all regulatory functions of the body.
For example, immune functions that are decisive in many diseases such cardiovascular disease, cancers and autoimmune diseases are regulated by the brain. They also influence mood and energy levels. All pain - whatever the underlying trigger for it - 'happens' in the brain. All pain experience is an expression of brain function, even though we may 'feel' the pain to be located in the back, the tummy or the leg.
At the same time challenges to the health of the body are also challenges to our mental well-being. The disease process itself can influence how we feel emotionally. Medical treatments, financial burdens and the health system itself can take their toll. Navigating daily life is tough when the body struggles.
Whatever your health challenge that has your body struggling, please consider getting psychotherapeutic support so that mind and body together have the best possible chance to get through this for you.
CBT- especially when complemented with techniques coming out of mindfulness and/or hypnotic traditions - has shown itself as particularly helpful.
